# Murphy beds in Logan, North Logan, Smithfield and Providence

Murphy beds for Logan, North Logan, Smithfield and Providence: USU basement apartments, old brick homes with low basements, scheduled trips north in Utah.

Cache Valley is well north of our regular routes, so we go up on scheduled trips rather than one house at a time. That works because the valley has two kinds of homes that suit a murphy bed very well: older brick houses in Logan with basements rented to students, and newer homes in North Logan, Smithfield and Providence with families who host all winter.

## USU student housing and basement apartments

Logan has a basement apartment under a large share of the homes within a mile of Utah State. Most are one or two bedrooms, low-ceilinged, and rented by the room. A murphy bed does two things for a landlord here. In a studio or a one-bedroom, a [sofa bed or desk bed](/basement-adu/) lets the main room be a living room and a bedroom, which rents better and photographs better. In a shared unit, a horizontal twin in a small bedroom leaves room for a desk, which is the thing a student actually asks about.

For a basement apartment the practical questions are the ceiling, the egress window, and the wall. Student basements in the older part of Logan run 7 feet to 7 feet 6 inches, which rules out a vertical queen. A horizontal queen at about 67 inches tall or a horizontal full at 62 fits under nearly all of them. The [sizes page](/sizes/) has every number.

Landlord note: a piston bed with a latch holds up to tenants better than a spring bed, and the mattress can be replaced between leases without retuning. The cabinet should be a hard finish, painted or laminate, not a soft stain.

## Older brick homes with low basements

Logan's Island neighborhood, the older streets near downtown, and the old parts of Smithfield and Hyrum have brick homes from the 1900s through the 1950s. Main-floor ceilings are often 9 feet or more, which is wonderful for a bed upstairs. Basements are the opposite: 7 feet or less, concrete or stone walls, ducts across the ceiling, a furnace in the middle.

If the bed is going upstairs in one of these homes, a vertical queen with side cabinets in a spare bedroom or a sitting room fits with air to spare, and a painted finish suits the plaster and the wide trim. If it is going in the basement, a cabinet chest bed at about 40 inches tall, pulling out to 80, needs no wall anchoring and does not care about the ducts. That matters in a stone-walled basement where anchoring is not easy.

## North Logan, Smithfield, Providence and the newer homes

The newer developments along the benches and north through Smithfield are 2000s and 2010s two-stories with full basements, some of them 9 feet. These homes host: USU parents on a game weekend, married kids home from Idaho, grandparents down from Preston. The common order is a queen with side cabinets in the basement family room and a twin desk bed in whichever bedroom became the office. Builder trim is painted white here as it is everywhere, and a painted shaker door matches it.

Providence and River Heights in particular have larger lots and bigger homes with a mother-in-law suite, where a king is not unusual.

## Cold winters and guest season

Cache Valley winters are long, inversions settle in January, and the valley is a place people come to for the holidays and for USU weekends rather than a place they drive through. Guest season runs from Thanksgiving to the end of the ski season at Beaver Mountain, and then again for summer weddings. A murphy bed means the guest room does not sit as a guest room for the nine months in between.

One winter detail: basements in older Logan homes can be damp. A cabinet raised on a toe kick with a finished back keeps the mattress off a cold wall, and a bed that folds up every morning airs the mattress better than one on a frame.

## Scheduled trips north

We batch Cache Valley visits. Send the form and we reply the same business day with what fits and a range, then put you on the next trip up, usually within a few weeks. Measuring and samples happen on that visit, and the install crew comes back on a second trip once the bed is built, four to eight weeks later. Installs are about half a day, and we try to put two or three Cache Valley installs on the same day.

Send a photo of the wall and the ceiling height, and tell us if the bed is for a rental or your own home. We reply the same business day and you go on the list for the next trip north.

## Questions people ask

**Do you really come to Logan?**

Yes, on scheduled trips. Send the form, we reply the same business day with a range, and you go on the next trip north for the measure and samples. Install is a second trip four to eight weeks later.

**My Logan basement apartment has a 7 foot ceiling. Is there any bed that fits?**

A horizontal full at about 62 inches tall or a horizontal queen at about 67 fits under a 7 foot ceiling. A cabinet chest bed at 40 inches tall needs no wall anchoring at all, which helps in a stone-walled basement.

**Is a murphy bed worth it in a student rental?**

In a studio or one-bedroom, usually yes, because the main room becomes a living room and the listing photographs better. Spec a piston mechanism, a latch and a hard finish.

**What finish holds up in a rental?**

Painted shaker in a conversion varnish or a laminate face. Both wipe clean and touch up. A soft stained finish shows the wear of a tenant turnover.
