The home office that is also the guest room
The spare bedroom became the office and now the in-laws are coming. A murphy bed gives the office a real bed without giving up the desk, and the desk bed version keeps your monitor exactly where it was.
Three layouts that work
The desk bed. One unit, one wall. The desk is built into the bed face and stays level as the bed comes down. Best for rooms under about 11 by 12 feet. See murphy bed with desk.
Bed on one wall, desk on another. A plain cabinet bed with side cabinets on the long wall, your existing desk on the window wall. Needs about 7 feet 6 inches clear in front of the bed with the desk out of the swing. Works in rooms 11 by 12 and up.
Horizontal bed under the window. For rooms with low ceilings or where the only free wall is short. A horizontal queen is about 67 inches tall, so it fits under most windows, and only sticks out 65 inches when open.

Questions people ask
What is the best murphy bed layout for a small office?
A vertical queen desk bed on the longest wall, with the desk facing the room, and a single side cabinet for storage. In a 10 by 11 room that leaves the floor open when the bed is up and still fits the bed when it is down.
Where does the monitor go when the bed is down?
On the desk, which stays level. A desk bed rotates the desk under the open bed without tipping it. A monitor arm or a laptop stand is fine.
Can I keep a regular desk and add a murphy bed?
Yes, if the room is big enough for both footprints. A plain cabinet bed on one wall and your desk on another works in rooms about 11 by 12 and up. In smaller rooms the desk bed is the answer.
