Murphy bed kit, flat-pack or custom? What each one really involves
Three words get mixed up in search: a murphy bed kit, a flat-pack murphy bed, and a custom murphy bed. They are three different projects with three different price tags, and the cheapest one costs the most weekends. This is what each one is, what it runs in Utah in 2026, and when each is the right call.
The three, side by side
| Hardware kit | Flat-pack | Custom | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What arrives | Mechanism, pivots, legs, plans | Cabinet panels, mechanism, bag of hardware | A finished cabinet, built to your wall |
| Who builds the cabinet | You | The factory, you assemble | A Utah cabinet shop |
| Who installs | You | You or an installer | A partner crew |
| Typical cost | Kit plus lumber, sheet goods and finish | $400 to $1,500 plus install | $4,400 to $6,500, up to $10,000 with side cabinets or a desk |
| Your time | Three to six weekends | One long day, two with the anchoring | A design visit and a half-day install |
Costs are the Utah ladder from published 2026 pricing. The full ladder is on the cost page.
A hardware-only kit: you are building furniture
A murphy bed hardware kit is the honest name for it. You get the mechanism, the pivot hardware, folding legs, a latch, and a set of cut plans. The cabinet is yours to build. That means several sheets of plywood or MDF, a face frame, doors, edge banding, and a finish that will be looked at from across the room for ten years.
The weekends go like this. One to cut and assemble the carcass. One for doors and the face frame. One for sanding and finish, two if it is paint. One to mount the mechanism, set the mattress, tune it, and anchor the cabinet. Budget more if you have never hung a door flush.
The mechanism choice matters more here than anywhere. Piston kits are forgiving. Spring kits are tuned by trial, and the cabinet base has to carry the spring load, which means a heavier build than the plans sometimes admit.
Flat-pack: the Costco, Wayfair and Home Depot bed
A flat-pack murphy bed is a cabinet in boxes. Costco sells Bestar wall beds in roughly the $950 to $4,800 range. Wayfair, Home Depot and Walmart list beds from about $400 to $1,500 with mixed reviews. The cabinet is particleboard or MDF with a laminate face, the mechanism is lighter, and the whole thing comes with a bag of cam locks and a manual.
Assembly is a long day for two people. Anchoring to the wall is the part people skip, and it is the part that keeps the cabinet upright while the bed is moving. An installer along the Wasatch Front charges a few hundred dollars to assemble and anchor a cabinet bed. See the installation page for what that covers.
Custom: built to your wall
A custom murphy bed is drawn for your room. The cabinet height is set to your ceiling, the doors match your trim, side cabinets run to the wall, and the finish is a real paint or stain on real wood or plywood. In Utah a custom cabinet bed built and installed locally runs $4,400 to $6,500, and a wall unit with side cabinets, a desk or a sofa runs $6,500 to $10,000.
Your part is a form, a design visit with samples, and being home for half a day in four to eight weeks.
When the kit is the right call
- You already build furniture and own the tools. The kit is a project you will enjoy.
- The bed goes somewhere the finish does not matter, a workshop loft or a cabin bunk room.
- You want an odd size or a cabinet for a strange alcove and are willing to engineer it.
When flat-pack is the right call
- Guests come a few nights a year and the room is otherwise a storage room.
- You are renting or will move within a couple of years.
- The budget is under two thousand dollars, all in.
When custom wins
- The bed is in a room you look at every day: an office, a living room, a finished basement family room.
- The wall has a soffit, an outlet, or a ceiling under 8 feet, so a stock cabinet does not fit cleanly. Check with the fit checker.
- You want a desk that stays level or a sofa in front, both of which are real cabinetry.
- You want it done in half a day by someone else.
Tell us which of the three you are leaning toward and send a photo of the wall. We reply the same business day, and if the flat-pack is the right answer for your room we will say so.
Questions people ask
How much does a murphy bed kit cost?
The hardware alone is the smallest line. Add sheet goods, a face frame, doors, finish and the hours, and most builders end up near the price of a flat-pack bed with a better cabinet and a lot of weekends spent.
Can you install a murphy bed I bought from Costco or Wayfair?
Yes. Installation of a bought cabinet bed along the Wasatch Front runs a few hundred dollars, more if it has side cabinets or a desk.
Is a flat-pack murphy bed safe?
When it is anchored to the wall and the legs are used, yes. The common failure is skipping the anchoring because the wall is concrete or the studs are hard to find.
How long does a custom murphy bed take?
Four to eight weeks from the design visit to install, and the install is about half a day.
