White, black and painted murphy beds, and what the paint costs you

White murphy beds are the most searched color in Utah, and black murphy beds are climbing. Both are painted beds, and paint changes the wood, the prep, the price and how the bed wears. Here is the whole picture before you choose a color.

Why white is the most common ask

Most houses built along the Wasatch Front in the last fifteen years have white painted trim, white doors and often white kitchen cabinets. A white murphy bed in that house disappears into the millwork, which is the point. A stained bed in the same room reads as a piece of furniture against the wall. Both can look right. White is simply the one that goes unnoticed in a new Utah home.

Matching matters more than it sounds. Builder whites vary, some warm, some cool, some with a touch of grey, and a wall bed in the wrong white stands out the way a replaced door does. We check the sample against your trim and doors in your room, in daylight and at night, before any paint is sprayed.

Paint-grade maple, and why not alder

Paint needs a wood that will not show through it. Maple is the standard: hard, tight grained, with no open pores to telegraph through the finish. Alder and oak have visible grain and in oak's case open pores, so they belong under stain. A painted bed built on the wrong wood looks fine on day one and shows a faint grain pattern in raking light within a year.

The box behind the doors is furniture-grade plywood either way, which is what any good cabinet is built on. The wood murphy bed page explains why that is the stronger build and not a shortcut.

Paint versus stain for a bed that gets used

Paint gives you any color and a clean, current look. It costs more because of prep. It shows a chip or a scuff more readily than stain, because the color is a layer on the surface rather than in the wood. A sprayed catalyzed finish, the kind cabinet shops use, is much harder than the paint on your walls, and a chip can be touched up.

Stain is cheaper, hides wear better over the years, and is easier to match to stained cabinets already in the house. Its range is limited to wood colors.

For a guest room used a few nights a month, either one lasts. For a kids room or a daily-use office, think about which finish you would rather touch up.

Black, navy and color for kids rooms

A black murphy bed or a navy one is a strong choice for a kids room or a teen room, where the bed is used every night and the walls are already doing something. Dark paint hides fingerprints better than white but shows dust and fine scratches more, so a satin or matte sheen is the usual pick over gloss.

Color is also where paint earns its place. Sage, deep green, terracotta and charcoal are all a sample away. Because the bed is built to order, the color is chosen with the room, not from a catalog of three options.

What the prep costs, and where it lands on the ladder

On the 2026 Utah price ladder, a custom cabinet bed built and installed locally runs $4,400 to $6,500. Paint sits above stain on the same bed, and the gap is labor: a painted door is sanded, filled, primed, sanded again and sprayed in several coats, and the shop spends that time whether the color is white or navy. Flat doors need the most prep because every ripple shows. Shaker doors are a little more forgiving.

Side cabinets and a desk in paint cost more than the same pieces in stain for the same reason. A painted wall unit with side cabinets or a desk lands in the $6,500 to $10,000 band.

Questions people ask

What wood is under a painted murphy bed?

Paint-grade maple for the doors and face frame, over a plywood box. Maple is tight grained and takes paint smooth. Alder and oak show grain through paint, so they stay under stain.

Can you match the white trim in my new house?

Usually, yes. Most Utah builders use a small set of whites, and we match against your actual trim and doors in your light rather than a chip. Unusual colors get a sample door before the full build.

Does a painted murphy bed chip?

Paint can chip at an edge if it takes a hard knock, and a painted bed shows a chip more than a stained one does. A sprayed catalyzed finish is far tougher than wall paint, and touch-up is simple. Stain hides wear better over ten years.

Why does paint cost more than stain?

Prep. A painted door has to be sanded, filled, primed, sanded again and sprayed in several coats to look flat. Stain goes on, gets wiped and is topcoated. The labor difference is real and it is in the price.
