A modern murphy bed that looks like part of the house, not a piece of furniture

Modern murphy beds get searched in Utah every month, and most of the results are catalog beds with a flat door bolted on. A modern wall bed that actually reads as part of the room is about proportion, flat faces and nothing extra. Here is what goes into one.

Flat panel doors and nothing on them

The door is most of what you see. A modern murphy bed uses flat slab doors, no raised panel, no shaker rail, no profile at the edge. The gaps between the doors and the side cabinets are kept tight and even, usually about an eighth of an inch, so the wall reads as one surface.

Hardware disappears. Push latches hold the door closed and release it with a press of the hand, so there is no pull or knob to interrupt the face. Where a latch is not the right answer, a routed finger groove along the top edge of the door gives you something to grip without a visible handle. The legs that swing out to hold the bed up are tucked behind the face when closed.

Finishes that read current

Matte paint is the most common ask. White is the baseline, but charcoal, deep green, navy and warm grey are all in play, and all of them go on paint-grade maple with the prep that a flat door needs to look flat. Paint shows everything, so the surface is sanded, primed and sprayed, not brushed.

If you want wood, keep the grain quiet. Maple under a clear coat, or a rift-cut oak veneer with a light finish, keeps the modern feel while still reading as wood. Heavy grain and dark stains push the bed back toward traditional, which is fine if that is the room, but it is not what most people mean by a modern murphy bed.

Integrated LED lighting

A light strip in the header of the cabinet, switched at the side, gives a guest reading light with no lamp and no cord. Under-cabinet strips below floating shelves do the same job for a home office. The channel for the strip is routed into the cabinet during the build so the light source is hidden and only the glow shows. It is a small line item on a custom bed and a hard thing to retrofit cleanly.

Side cabinets that make it a wall unit

A bed cabinet on its own is a tall box in the middle of a wall. Flank it with side cabinets, floating shelves or a run of closed storage and the proportions change. The bed becomes the center panel of a built-in, which is the look most people are picturing when they search for a modern wall bed.

Common layouts along the Wasatch Front:

Ceiling height sets the limits. A vertical queen cabinet runs 87 to 90 inches tall and needs about 90 inches at the wall; below that we go horizontal, which also suits a long low wall in a basement. The sizes page has every dimension.

Modern murphy bed with couch

The sofa murphy bed is the combo that gets searched most, and it is a natural fit for the modern look. A low, tight-back sofa sits in front of the cabinet, and the bed folds down over it without moving the cushions. Closed, it is a sofa against a flat wall of cabinetry. Open, it is a queen bed with the sofa tucked underneath.

The sofa is specced to the bed: seat depth, back height and the gap between them are fixed by the mechanism, so the couch is part of the design rather than something you buy afterward. Details and dimensions are on the murphy bed with sofa page.

What it costs

Flat doors and push latches do not cost more than shaker doors. Paint costs more than stain because of the prep. Side cabinets, lighting and a sofa are each real cabinetry, so a modern wall unit lands in the $6,500 to $10,000 band on the 2026 Utah ladder, while a plain modern cabinet bed sits in the $4,400 to $6,500 band for a custom build installed locally.

Questions people ask

What makes a murphy bed look modern?

Flat panel doors with no profile, no visible handles, a matte or low-sheen finish, and proportions that line up with the ceiling and the wall. Most of the modern look is in what you leave off.

Can a modern murphy bed have no handles at all?

Yes. Push latches release the door with a press, and a routed finger pull along the top edge works where a latch is not practical. Either keeps the face flat.

Does a modern murphy bed with couch work in a small room?

A sofa murphy bed needs the same floor depth as a plain vertical bed when open, about 87 inches for a queen. The sofa sits inside that footprint, so a small room gains seating without losing floor. Width is the real limit, and the sizes page has the numbers.

Is integrated LED lighting worth it?

For a guest room or an office that doubles as one, yes. A strip in the header or under the side cabinets gives reading light with no lamp on the floor, and it is cheap to add during the build and awkward to add later.
